Chapter Twelve

During the very delicious meal of brisket and rice, corn and refried beans, Mercy had learned that what the family referred to as the Big House was the original homestead for this branch of the Benedict family. She’d very much enjoyed the story these Benedicts had told, during supper, of the founding of Lusty.

Sarah Carmichael Benedict had been married in Chicago to a Texan named Tyrone Maddox—the marriage having been arranged by Sarah’s father. Maddox had instructed Sarah to remain at her father’s house so she could pack her few belongings allowed on the journey and say her good-byes. He had business that couldn’t wait, but he would send escorts to see her safely to Texas. And he’d left her there, apparently, without consummating the marriage.

The men he’d sent to fetch his bride had been gunslingers. Maddox had been under the assumption the pair of brothers had been simple guns for hire, as so many men had been in the days following the end of the Civil War.

That had been Maddox’s first fatal miscalculation.

Not only had Caleb and Joshua Benedict been men of good character, their usual work as hired guns had been for various sheriffs and law-enforcement agencies in the mid-west and south. They’d worked not only with Adam Kendall, who’d been in charge of the Waco division of the Texas Rangers, they’d also worked with two very well-known lawmen of their day—Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp.

When Maddox’s male lover, on his behalf and at his direction, had sent various villains to kill Sarah, Caleb and Joshua, of course, had intervened and protected her. Along the trail from Chicago to Texas, Sarah had fallen in love with her gunslingers, and they with her. Once they’d arrived in the Lone Star State and had consulted with Adam Kendall, a trap was successfully laid, and Maddox confessed his crimes. Then he’d tried to kill Warren Jessop—Adam Kendall’s lover. Fortunately, Joshua Benedict had been a very fast draw and a much better shot than Maddox.

Thinking he could out-gun Joshua Benedict had been the man’s second fatal miscalculation.

Because the blackguard had meant to give legitimacy to his marriage, he’d made Sarah his sole heir. After he’d been buried, Sarah had married Caleb and Joshua…and the rest, as they say, was history.

There was still a very large barn visible from the picture window in the great room, and it was to this barn that the men, all six of them, had gone to walk off their supper and allow the women time to themselves.

“Ranching was the first source of income for the families,” Bernice Benedict said. Her gaze, along with the gaze of every woman in the room, had been on the men, watching them enter the large structure.

They were now in the great room, Mercy and these three very dynamic Benedict women. They were women who’d come from different places, from different backgrounds, and had married into the Benedict family. And yet, in her opinion, they represented the family—its strength and its resiliency and its values.
